new york university is a private, nonsectarian research university based in new york city. nyu's main campus is situated in the greenwich village section of manhattan. founded in 1831, nyu is one of the largest private, nonprofit institutions of higher education in the united states. most of nyu's buildings are located across a roughly 229 acre area bounded by houston street to the south, broadway to the east, 14th street to the north, and sixth avenue to the west. the core of nyu's buildings surround washington square park.
