---AT twenty-seven years old, cassius could not come up with a single thing he had taken as seriously as harley’s engagement. not getting kicked out of high school before graduating, not getting his young girl friend pregnant, none of that had ever been a concern. they all played out of be occurrences he could write off as life taking its course, but this was nothing of the same sort. when she first mentioned this apparent marriage between her and some investment banker, it was a passing thought- something that went in one ear, and out the other. he had spent night after night convincing himself that it was not true, that it was something she had conjured in her own mind to make him jealous, to appreciate what it was he once had, anything. never in a million years would he have believed such utter nonsense escaping harley’s lips. the only crash to reality was the call received from his brother, asking him if he too was going to harley’s wedding. it was only then that he realized it was not nonsense, nor just a ploy to get him jealous, but something she was actually going through with doing. the first thought that crossed his calloused mind was that she was still just doing this to piss him off, but somewhere within the depths of it, there was that fear that she had actually had enough of him. that she had reached a level where she could take no more, and though he would never admit it, he could not blame her.
---FOR the past nine years of her life, he had treated her like his own property; consciously riding her of her friends, family, anyone who was not him or their daughter, refusing to let her get a job, go out with the few friends she had left. though somewhere within his aberrant train of thought she wasn’t just his property, but his most prized possession. a possession so fragile that he had to lock her away from the outside world, and take care of her on his own. obvious to everyone but him, there was a certain point where he had taken it too far. threatening her turning into actually laying a hand on her, harsh words turning into cruel words, sleeping with other women practically openly just so she felt as though she was the one with something to lose. he had dealt with her friends calling him psychotic, and controlling, never taking any of their words to heart. because somewhere within that mind, they would not be able to understand being so absolutely, irrevocably in love with someone. because at the end of the day, no matter how he expressed it, that was what he was. and the fear of her getting out, and experiencing people worthy of her, was enough to throw him completely over the edge from day one.
---AND here it was, nine years later, her having found the one man probably worthy of everything that she was. his mind had not been put to rest for days, within the confines of the apartment that was once theirs, he contemplated virtually everything he could do to put a halt to this marriage. vicodin and jack daniel’s leading him to believe that finding this man, and beating him until he bled to death was a ordinary thought. but as soon as there were no pills, alcohol, or money to purchase anymore, his train of thought was more sober, and rational. he could either let her be, or he could show her that somewhere within him was still the man she was once in love with. he could let it go, and say he never tried, or he could give it one last shot. and within a matter of moments, the latter was the only option. he was not about to let her go, not that easily, not without one last fight.
---IT was not long before he was there, at the hotel the night before her wedding. getting past the front desk was as hard as he had expected, what was he supposed to say? hey, i’m here to ruin my ex-girlfriends wedding. it was not going to work, but claiming that something was wrong with allie would. their daughter called in a frenzy, and they were giving him her room number and directing him toward the elevators. for a second their lack of security worried him, but not enough to stop and do anything about it. as he found himself at the door, he rested his forehead upon it for a moment. attempting to hear if she was even in there, if allie was in there with her. he didn’t want to cause another scene in front of her, at seven years old she had seen her fair share of things he had promised himself he would never let her see. so with that, he knocked lightly at the wooden door, and heard footsteps coming towards it. he was convinced that she would look through tiny glass, see him, and call security. but instead, he heard her telling him to go away. instead of the fight he would have put up under any other circumstance, he took out an old receipt from his pocket, and a pen, and wrote: “i’m not going anywhere. talk to me for two seconds, and i’ll leave you alone forever.” he slipped it under the door, and let his back rest against the door frame, eventually letting his body fall in that same pattern, waiting in the hallway for her to open it, willing to wait as long as she was going to take.
