taken, by lex, phb name cloke westwood.[/font]this plot is, as you may have guessed, surrounding a bunch of characters adopted and modified from that classic, the great gatsby. we've done this before on an old site and i swear, it's a lot of fun! but i would also like to take this opportunity to make it clear that i've tweaked the set up big time. it needed a bit of adaption for rp, y'know? but hopefully the original characters are visible through the facade. anyhow, these are the ones that immediately sprung to mind. if you'd like to be involved but none of these take your fancy, i can make someone up to suit your needs, either based off one of the more minor characters in the novel or from scratch. just let me know ! the pictures used for each character are purely illustrative, pbs are up to you <3
nick carraway - nick is the linchpin of the plot, if you like. he's really more of an observer than a player, and it's this observant nature that leads others to trust him and confide in him about all manner of personal issues. he's a midwesterner by birth, and he's always somehow aware of this, going through life on the east coast as something of a tourist. he's in the same fraternity as gatsby, in fact they share a dorm, and he's constantly conflicted about exactly how he feels towards his frat brother. he likes to think of himself as non-judgmental - he prides honesty above everything, though is perhaps not as honest as he likes to believe - but can't help feeling hard done by being caught up in gatsby's deceptions. this includes the affair gatsby is having with daisy, who happens to be nick's cousin. though he's involved in the gang's exploits, nick has perhaps the strongest moral compass, and is riddled with conflicting emotions.
[/ul]
jay gatby - jay is best known by both his frat brothers and the wider college community as the party boy. claiming to hail from fabulously affluent parents and having the disposable cash to prove it, jay is generous with his wealth and uses much of it throwing his infamous ragers every saturday night. besides his claims at affluence, jay is oddly private about his origins, and no one is aware of where he comes from or what his childhood was like. jay is particularly defensive of these secrets out of concern that others will judge his rather poor origins, instead using the money he's gained through his close partnership with meyer wolfsheim to allude to familial wealth. he first met daisy at orientation, and they had a brief love affair, one that has remained with him since though daisy left him for his fraternity president, tom buchanan. convinced (and rightly so) that tom was chosen over him on grounds of wealth, jay continues to earn money through the drug deals meyer sets up, willing to do anything to win her back and maintain the respect of his peers. jay is a hopeless dreamer, and his optimism overcomes all barriers.
[/ul]
daisy buchanan - nick's cousin and the object of gatsby's affection, daisy is a vibrant young woman who knows exactly what she wants. hailing from a wealthy family, daisy has always had every whim catered to, and this has led to her being more than slightly bored with life. with selfish tendencies and a deep need to be loved, daisy can be unintentionally heartless in her pursuit of the next man. this led her to abandon her fledgling relationship with jay gatsby in favor of his sexy frat president, tom buchanan. now that she's found herself playing trophy girlfriend to tom, she's starting to realize that life at the top isn't all it's cracked up to be, what with his frivolous cheating and callous handling of her. though she tries to hide it, daisy is deeply dissatisfied with how her life has turned out.
jordan baker - jordan is daisy's sorority sister, and they share a cynicism that keeps them tight friends. although she shares daisy's tendency towards selfishness, jordan is otherwise opposite to her best friend, being boyish and enjoying a certain amount of control over her life. a long-time athlete, jordan isn't afraid of any competition and can hold her own against the boys. unlike her on/off boyfriend nick carraway, jordan has a closer relationship with dishonesty than honesty, and doesn't understand why he's so keen on the truth.
tom buchanan - immensely wealthy, charismatic and a regular face on the society pages, tom is the man of the minute. president of the fraternity jay and nick belong to, tom swans about the place like he owns it - well, his parents paid for most of it. tom's a typical society boy, privileged and charming. he enjoys feeling in control of his life, and he exercises his control most expertly over his girlfriend, daisy. though he presents himself as ideal marriage material, the truth is that tom is incapable of commitment, and he couldn't care less about those he stomps on in his pursuit of a good life. he's got no concern over the moral status of his affairs - particularly with myrtle, his favorite mistress - but the idea that daisy may be cheating on him drives him into a blind rage.
[/ul]
myrtle wilson - sorority sister to daisy and jordan, myrtle has always been something of an outsider in the sorority. though she's fun-loving and a great person to have around at parties, the girls have some difficulty trusting her when their boyfriends are openly drooling after her... particularly when she's actively encouraging them to do so. she practically sweats sexual allure, and the stories about her prowess in the bedroom regularly make the rounds on campus. she regularly finds herself keeping tom buchanan's bed warm, but she desperately longs to be his girlfriend - a wish that her reputation, not to mention daisy, stands in the way of. though her long-term boyfriend george worships the ground she walks on, myrtle's yearning to climb the social ladder trumps any affection she may once have held for him.
[/ul]
george wilson - though george was an exuberant youth, full of life and energy, life has slowly drained him of it. though he achieved his long-term dream of being the first member of his family to make it to college, things since then have been steadily going south. first, his father left his mother, since george wasn't at home to keep them together. then, racked with loneliness and desperation, george's mother took her ex-husband's discarded gun and shot herself. isolated in new york, thousands of miles away from home, even george's childhood sweetheart myrtle is becoming emotionally distant. things are quickly approaching breaking point for george, but his idealistic nature and unrequited love has gained him the friendship of jay gatsby and nick carraway.
[/ul]
meyer wolfsheim - close friends with jay gatsby, meyer wolfsheim is generally what most people would consider bad news. deceitful and manipulative, this la native has found himself fulfilling the role of primary drug dealer to his affluent classmates. using jay to handle any tricky situations and giving him a generous cut for the privilege, meyer knows how to get what he wants without tarnishing his name. he's followed everywhere he goes by a small clique of californian girls, all of whom worship him, and he's very rarely seen without his trademark wayfarers. though he's hard to pin down and intentionally vague about his sexual pursuits, he's secretly got a real soft spot for his girlfriend, lola moretti.
[/ul]
the following aren't based off characters from the book, but are other members of the group.
lola moretti - both genetic and sorority sister to genevie moretti (jordan baker), lola shares her sister's boyishness. counting herself as one of the boys, lola is in a complicated relationship with meyer wolfsheim. it started as a means for her to get cheap coke, and it was that flippancy towards him that really got his attention, since he was rather used to girls throwing themselves at him. she likes to think the fact she spent her childhood in new orleans is a fact that's obvious in her day to day manner, and is a real free spirit.
[/ul]
sophia chapman - sophia has always been known as the sweetheart. sorority sister to the other girls, sophia's door is always open to anyone who needs a listening ear. in the past year she's become close friends with george wilson, and though she does her best to give him impartial advice, her increasing feelings towards him make it difficult for her to sit by and watch him have his heart broken by myrtle. thankfully, it turns out that her feelings may just be reciprocated.

so there they are. obviously all this lot know each other, so even though all the relationships aren't explicitly stated there'll be plenty of potential to plot them together. if you want to claim one, please post the following in code, along with which character you're taking, after your application has been accepted. to reserve, just reply here saying you're looking to take one up! if within three days you haven't lived up to that reservation by completing an application, the character is again up for grabs.
