the glow of his phone radiated onto his face, features bold and masculine, the decision to dial familiar numbers weighing heavily on his thumbs. francis was met by an urge, an urge to hear her voice. not even talk, just listen to that voice.. he could reason with that. he swallowed thickly, crumbling fingers onto numbers, rhythmic beeps following each button. he held his cellphone to his ear, mildly hoping that her number would come up out of service, giving him an excuse not to talk.. cancelling out that urge. but at the second ring it became apparent that it was indeed, still in service. addie.. before she even answered hello, francis here, what's up? he put an agnoized hand to his temple, cringing at the lameness that oozed at his every vowel.

while midterms had just ended she still found herself buried in the books as she slumped over her desk glaring at the words on the page. she looked over to see her phone as it started to vibrate against her desk all the while flashing to get her attention. she squinted her eyes as she looked over to see a name she wasn't quite expecting. she shook her head and decided to answer it just this once as she slid her finger across the answer button. she held the phone to her ear as she heard his voice - still sounding exactly the same. she took in a deep breathe as a puzzled look took over her face still a bit confused by the call in general. "... francis? um ... i'm studying. is there something wrong?" she couldn't quite understand why he would be calling her as she hadn't heard from him in such a long time. she had moved all the way to new york and never turned back but with this single phone call she was feeling her past reopen right in front of her eyes. "did someone die or something?" she asked a rude tone floating around her words as she tried to understand his reason for calling.

he heard her voice, and his spine pulsated. though it had been years, months, days, hours since they had last seen each other (never less talked) she sounded no different. her voice chimmed, it's perkiness and over feminine, it made it difficult for him to be angry with her. in the background he could hear the hum of the television in the background, he sloached forward, grasping the remote and turning down american pickers. uhh.. he laughed, understanding her obvious confusion, no, nothing like that. clawing his forehead for guidance, and shortly after deciding it had none to give, he huffed and decided that was enough. you're busy though, eh? give a text or something.

she could vaguely recall their last conversation together but she did remember the yelling. they were angry with one another for letting their little affair go on for so long. she knew that he had begun to feel something more for her or so she thought and she felt that there had been something there as well but in true adalyn fashion she brushed it off as if it was nothing. she pressed the palm of her hand to her forehead as she leaned over her desk staring at the paperwork in front of her while listening to his all too familiar voice. "no, no, i mean it's fine i just haven't heard from you in quite awhile so i suspected the worst." she took in a deep breathe as she attempted to gather her thoughts. she was terrible with social networking sites and hardly ever updated her facebook much less kept up with old friends from the past so she had absolutely no idea where francis was these days. "sooo ... still in winnipeg? i moved to new york if you didn't know." she said attempting to make this phone call the slightest bit normal although it really wasn't. "i go to columbia and well it's just a refreshing change i guess." she said as she slipped back against the chair as she held the phone to her face biting her lower lip as she thought back to their last days together.

the boy collected himself, trying to change his train of thought. when was he working tomorrow.. night shift, afternoon? .. she was still in his head, vandalizing the walls with translucent scars and quotes. yea.. no, figured it'd been a while, didn't end things on too good of terms, he admitted, though not nearly ready to apologize for previous words spat. francis lifted his body and sprawled it on the couch, feet propped atop the arm rest and head supported by a pillow while he held the phone to his ear. really? ack, good for you then, his attempt to shadow surprise was an obvious failure, he was sure she could tell he was faking it. nah, out of the shithole. brooklyn now.. firefighting, he paused, adjusting his comfort. needed to do something with a mortality rate.

their last words had been harsh and heartfelt - both feeling quite betrayed by what their relationship had slowly become. she tried to keep her thoughts away from those memories but his voice kept pulling her back. she remembered the look on his face the moment she walked out the door never to turn back. there had been many nights where she thought of calling him but never dared to do so too ashamed of the past to ever turn back on it. she broke most of the rules she set for herself with francis. she actually felt something for the boy and that wasn't quite allowed in adalyn's world. "yeah, i think we were a little too caught up in the moment." she admitted although she knew that she didn't quite regret those words she had said so many years ago. she was a bit shocked as he admitted to living in new york. she knew it was a big city and that's why she most likely had not seen him but just knowing that he was so close made her heart sink. "oh wow ... " the words left her lips before she was able to really say much else. "try to keep yourself alive long enough okay? we should get dinner sometime or something since you're in the city too." she didn't quite know if that was a good idea but she wanted to see him. she knew that it would just hurt to do so but who cares.

he could remember their last conversation vididly, the twenty-three year old had been so frusterated.. so angry with her, he had wanted to grab her by her shoulders and shake her, shake feeling into her. the instant he grabbed a vase and threw it at the wall, barely skimming her head, he knew he had gone too far. he was as she said.. too caught up in the moment, feeling far too much emotion. by the end of it violence seemed like the answer, never laying a finger on her, destroying his parent's kitchen more like.. swearing at the top of his lungs while artistically smashing glasses. uhh.. he found himself mumbling, unsure whether to accept the suggestion. no, i don't think so, denying calmly, scratching his facial hair. it'd be fucking rad to see you, but i can't.. you get it.

the anger in the room that night was a little too much to bear. she could remember the tears streaking down her face as they yelled at one another endlessly. all he wanted was for her to admit the feelings she did have for him but she just couldn't do so. she shut herself off and turned cold that night and didn't ever look back at the decision that had left their friendship at a loss. she listened to him mumble on the line and knew that asking to see him was most likely too much. she shook her head trying to play it off cool as she heard him politely decline her invitation for dinner. "yeah, i get it ..." she said as she turned away from her desk for the first time as she looked out the window. "i shouldn't have asked."

he had come to understand, not accept the fact that she was hesitant to reflect his feelings. she was his best friend's girlfriend.. his best friend who had gone off to war, given up his life and lover for his country. when they first started the brief affair he felt guilty, talking to him on the phone made him feel nauseous.. seeing his mother over for lunch with his, sent him running out the door. francis was smoking a pack a day at one point. but eventually the lying became easier, the guilt simmered off, and momentarily he felt like she was his. we'll probably run into each other or something, he reasoned, cracking a row of fingers. just thought i'd call to see if you were living a good life, and what ever.

it all started from one night with one too many beers. she knew that what she was doing was morally wrong but yet it felt right. at first it was simple to brush off one night and then the next until it became much more than just a few drunken nights. she had grown to like his bed and waking up in his arms just a bit too much. the phone calls with her boyfriend got harder as she tried to cover up the affair she was having. she was supposed to be missing him but she couldn't quite portray those feelings because they had disappeared. francis was always the better guy but in typical fashion she decided to go for the guy who was a little more of a risk. "yeah, well i'm good i guess." she was snapped back into the present as she heard his voice once more. she had been wrapped up in thoughts of the past. everything was so simple until it all got too complicated. they were both hurt in the process and although she thought she would never see him again she now felt it was necessary to. "i really would like to see you sometime, francis."
